Last December, our PhD Student Ana Cabrita presented her research at ICS, to her colleagues from SPARC: Social and Political Attitudes: Resilience and Change. This research group gathers political scientists, sociologists, and social psychologists experts in the use of quantitative and experimental methods, applied to the study of the determinants of political behavior and political support, identities and social differences, and the nature and consequences of social values.
Her presentation focused on the theoretical framework of Western Colonial Ideological Thinking. This research examines distint concepts of Western Colonial Ideological Thinking, including Social Representations of Colonialism and History, Post-colonial ideologies, and post-colonial mentality. The preliminary results from 59 studies on the matter showed the main measures used by the authors, such as the main consequences of Colonial Ideological Thinking (i.e. prejudice, bicultural policies, compensatory intentions), and the main influencing factors (i.e. interpersonal emotions, SDO, national identity, and others).
Ana proposes a new structural model in the Social Psychology field when looking at Colonial Ideological Thinking.
Stay tuned to see the progress of this research!
